STAR 99.1 salutes Market Street Mission, our Ministry of the Week!

Market Street Mission group discussion

The Market Street Mission ministers to the homeless, helpless, and hopeless in Northern NJ by meeting their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs through a structured program which enables them to lead responsible, productive lives.

The Mission was founded in 1889 by Morristown residents Dr. and Mrs. F. Owen in response to pleas from distraught wives whose husbands were addicted to alcohol. The Owens opened their home, offering classes for these women, and later for their husbands. When the fledgling program outgrew the Owen home, they rented a small store on Market Street, where they continued the classes and began to hold church services.

The Mission's main concern is meeting the critical needs of homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and children through its emergency services program. Tens of thousands are provided meals and lodging each year, along with a presentation of the saving power of Jesus Christ to rescue them from the consequences and ultimate penalty of sin. Alcohol and drug addiction recovery programs offer a "hand-up, rather than a hand-out." The six-month residential treatment program includes daily work at The Mission's thrift store, Bible study, a daily chapel service, group and individual counseling, AA/NA meetings, and computer-assisted and classroom instruction, plus discipleship for victorious Christian living.
