STAR 99.1 salutes Prison Fellowship, our Ministry of the Week!

Inmate praying in prison chapel

Did you know 2.3 million Americans are incarcerated—including 61,000 in New York! Ninety-five percent of them will be released back into our communities. Thirty-seven percent of prisoners are African-American even though they only make up 12 percent of the general U.S. population.

Since 1976 Prison Fellowship has been addressing these problems and has grown into the largest prison ministry in the world. How? Through people like you who have courageously accepted Jesus’ challenge to “visit those in prison.”

Our faith drives our mission of reconciling prisoners to God, their families, and our communities. Redeeming the wreckage left by crime and our warehouse approach to incarceration requires heart change, and practical help when these men and women reenter society.

Prisoners have families, too, including more than two million children. To break the cycle of crime that so often occurs within these families, Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree® program ministers to these children and their caregivers. In New York, Angel Tree served 11,200 children of prisoners during the 2008 Christmas season. Prisoners and their families need your help, in prison and at home, behind the scenes and in the community. Contact us to find out how.
